Being a work at home mom, has it's ups and downs. On the plus side, I get to spend all day with my kids and watch them reach each of their (early year) milestones. On the down side, I spend all day with my kids and they do not understand that work has to get done. Just like everything in life there is always a balance to be found. I currently have a few open orders to finish. I would like to have them completed, and shipped by December 1st. My plan, so far, is not going smoothly. For one, I was sick last week and it has taken days to re-charge. My kids have stopped sleeping through the night....all three of them....and we have no idea why.
There is a silver lining to the all night play sessions; I am able to get all of the laundry folded and put away. Plus, the dishes are getting done too #winwin.
Today, I was so exhausted that I was unable to use my sewing machine safely. To be honest, I shouldn't have been doing anything on my own. Luckily, I had plenty of adults coming in and out of the house so my little ones were completely okay. I may have lost a day in my office, but my laptop is portable, so I got a lot of snuggles and worked on making my website a little bit better. I even created a new logo! Hopefully, it looks as good when I'm not sleep deprived haha.
I have talked about ways to stay organized in my previous posts. Let's add to it by discussing balancing the day to day around all of those busy schedules. Things that I have to remind myself (almost daily) is that I cannot work a 9-5 job from home. Honestly, while my kids are at home, I can barely work two hours a day. There are times when my anxiety is through the roof because of the lack of work that gets done. And my daily house chores are not always a "daily" thing. But here's the key: It's OKAY!
My business is a small business for a reason. Right now, while my kids are at home I want to enjoy it. My business goal is to set the foundation for when my little ones are all in school, and I can go full-time. At that point, I will have a six hour day free to work, Monday through Friday. When my day-to-day starts feeling overwhelming or out of balance; I remind myself that I am working on my small goals right now, to set up for successful "big goals". I am here to enjoy my kids, work on my skills (because there is always something new to learn), and to grow within myself before growing my business into a career. Many small businesses go under because they grow too fast. Start small, take it slow, and grow a following. That way when you do take off, you at least have supporters to keep you going.
